SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — The Concho Valley may be entering the space race and getting its’ very own launchpad. A volunteer board member for the Concho Valley Technology Alliance (CVTA) sat down with CVHP to explain how the Concho Valley may potentially enter the space race.

Gabe Menchaca, volunteer board member for the CVTA, started off explaining what CVTA is and said they are just a group of “tech enthusiast” whose ambition is to advance technology in the Concho Valley.

The Texas Space Commision has granted the Concho Valley Council of Governments $500,000 award for them to go find a company to conduct a feasibility study for a launchpad reported Menchaca. This study looks at multiple different factors like if there’s public interest, is there enough power, land availability, water resources and is there enough manpower to operate this facility correctly.

Menchaca was asked who is able to use the launchpad and he said since the Texas Space Commision funded it, it’s a “race to space”. He mentioned that Texas is interested in getting back to the moon. He said that rockets and satellites could be launched from this potential launchpad.

The sentiment about the launchpad in the public is mixed reported Menchaca. The technology minded people are excited but there’s people who worry about its’ effects on the environment said Menchaca.

For anyone interested in learning more about the learning about CVTA or the potential launch pad, there will be a meeting at 6 p.m. on Aug. 12. at the Concho Valley Council of Governments, located 5430 Link Road.
