The Batman 2 & DCU’s Dark Knight Get Updates From James Gunn

James Gunn has shared his reaction to the script for The Batman 2.

Matt Reeves’ The Batman movie was released in United States theaters in 2022. Following the release of The Penguin spin-off series, a direct sequel, The Batman: Part II, is now expected to arrive in October 2027. Reeves and Mattson Tomlin just recently turned their script for The Batman 2 to Warner Bros.

What did James Gunn say about The Batman 2 and the DCU?

Speaking with Josh Horowitz on The Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gunn shared his reaction to The Batman 2 script.

“I like it,” he said. “For sure, we’re headed in the right direction. There are some things that we’ve still got to work out. But it’s headed in the right direction, for sure.”

Gunn also addressed the DCU’s Batman and noted that The Batman 2 and The Brave and the Bold, which is being directed by Andy Muschietti, “probably” won’t be released during the same calendar year.

Gunn wouldn’t say what project the DCU Batman will officially debut in or who will be playing him. He’s started multiple times in the past that he doesn’t have any plans to have it be Robert Pattinson or to combine Reeves’ The Batman Epic Crime Saga with the DCU.

When asked about Alan Ritchson, a name who often comes up for Batman fan-casts, Gunn said, “I am a big Alan Ritchson Fan. Both as an actor and as a guy. Let’s just wait to see what happens.”

Batman did make a non-speaking cameo in Creature Commandos; however, the show was animated, so no casting needed to be done. Clayface is currently scheduled to be released in 2026, and there’s a possibility that movie could feature the DCU Batman’s introduction, given that Clayface is a Dark Knight villain; however, production on that project is expected to begin relatively soon, meaning casting would need to be done quickly.
