Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier has clarified how close Werewolf by Night character Man-Thing actually came to being part of the roster for the titular team.

Back in April, Schreier disclosed to SFX Magazine that he “really wanted Man-Thing to be on the team.” Now, during a recent interview with ComicBookMovie.com, the director explained that the fan-favorite Werewolf by Night character was never in any serious discussions about who should be part of Thunderbolts*.

Man-Thing was never seriously considered for Thunderbolts*

“We didn’t come close at all [to adding Man-Thing to Thunderbolts*],” Schreier told ComicBookMovie. “I’m still learning how to do these interviews and what gets picked up. If you just say a little thing. It was like my first meeting on the movie. I wasn’t hired on it at all yet. It was an idea I threw out, but was not considered because what I didn’t know is that Man-Thing was in Werewolf by Night.”

The director added, “That was also before Robert Reynolds was part of the story, and then once he was in, that just became so much the focus. He was such a fascinating character. We built the story around our characters and him, and what he’s going through. We pretty much focused on that team and how to build the best movie out of that.”

At the time of writing, Marvel Studios has not announced any plans for a Werewolf by Night sequel or spin-off. The black-and-white Disney+ special, released under the Marvel Studios Special Presentation banner, follows a secret cabal of monster hunters at Bloodstone Temple who are thrust into a mysterious and deadly competition for a powerful relic. The special received near-unanimous praise, making it all the more peculiar that a follow-up has not yet been announced.

Werewolf by Night is available to stream on Disney+, while Thunderbolts* arrives on Blu-ray and DVD on July 29, 2025.
