Best known for the 1988 “Under the Milky Way,” which crossed over from the alternative charts to become a top 40 hit, the Church formed in Sydney in 1980 and has gone through several lineup changes over the years.
Singer-bassist Steve Kilbey is the band’s only original member these days. In a 2023 interview with this writer for TIDAL, he argued that he has the right to continue to perform under the Church banner, although he’s parted company with his original bandmates over the years.

He just wanted out,” Kilbey explained, referring to guitarist Peter Koppes. “That’s really it. It was a long time to put in and I wanted to carry on. I never saw why I should lay aside all this work I’ve done just because people come and go.
“Peter had come and gone before. Marty had come and gone before,” he added, referring to another departed guitarist, Marty Willson-Piper. “They were important guys, but they weren’t so important that the band had to stop if they left. That’s the way I saw it. Obviously, other people disagree with that, but when he left, I just got another guitarist.”
The Church’s next scheduled live date is Oct. 11 in South Mackay, Australia before they begin their Red Hot Summer Tour in Australia the following week.
