Aidan just threw a wrench into his romance with Carrie on And Just Like That —and no, we’re not referring to the rock he threw through her window.

In Thursday’s episode, Aidan tried to be playful and get Carrie’s attention by tossing a pebble at her window, but he ended up shattering a window made of irreplaceable century-old glass. And that was a bit of foreshadowing, because Aidan later dropped a bomb on Carrie: He told her he slept with his ex-wife Kathy. But the biggest shock came from Carrie’s reaction: She told him, “I kind of understand,” adding that she never agreed not to sleep with other people while they were apart… which threw Aidan for a loop.

The confusion about exactly what Carrie and Aidan agreed to was a sticking point in the And Just Like That writers’ room, too, executive producer Elisa Zuritsky tells TVLine: “On the first day [of writing Season 3], we all talked about what we each individually thought Aidan was asking Carrie to agree to, and we all said different things. So what we realized was: This is the perfect sociological or psychological experiment, where two people have basically signed different contracts.”

That rings true, though, Zuritsky believes: “In life, I think we don’t say everything we think and feel at every moment, especially when the stakes are so high, and we really wanted to explore that kind of gray area between two people who really want it to work. Like, you sort of don’t want to ruin it by over-talking.” Carrie and Aidan have been through a lot together, “and we wanted to keep swimming around the messiness of this relationship that has so much history and so much passion and so much baggage and so much love, so many good things. But part of the mess, I think, are these little and big misunderstandings that people can have when they love each other and think they’re communicating.”

None of the writers wanted Carrie to have a big, emotional reaction to Aidan’s confession, fellow EP Julie Rottenberg remembers: “You sort of see her talk herself through it.” But “that wasn’t the thing that broke them, or at least in this episode caused such conflict, but it was the reveal of: ‘Wait a minute, what did you agree to?’ It’s sort of like neither of them wanted to go back. Actually, it’s like going back to the most painful moment for each of them, for different reasons… I think there were a number of places where I felt like at any time, one of them could just want to eject out of that really sticky situation.”

So does this revelation and the ensuing miscommunication mean that Carrie might be looking for love outside of Aidan —with her landscaper Adam, perhaps, or her neighbor Duncan? “It could make them vulnerable to something,” Rottenberg allows, but she actually sees the conflict as a positive sign for Carrie and Aidan’s long-term future. “You could look at this conversation and say that this actually brings them closer,” she says, noting that Aidan later accompanied Carrie to the funeral of Lisa’s father, where she told him, “You are home.” In the EP’s eyes, “that could actually be a real repair of the rupture.”

What did you make of Aidan’s confession, and Carrie’s reaction to it? Do you think she should pursue something with Adam or Duncan? (Or both?) Let us know in the comments.
