A source close to the actor told Us Weekly on Thursday that their divorce, which was finalized last year, "is something that had been controlling his life for so many years."

"He loved her and he knows he made mistakes," the insider added.

Pitt and Jolie were together for nearly a decade before tying the knot in 2014.

“It was such a divisive, toxic situation,” the source said of the legal battle surrounding their split.

Jolie filed for divorce in 2016, but it wasn't finalized until December 2024.

The couple share six children: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Vivienne and Knox. Following a lengthy custody battle, Pitt has been estranged from his kids.

Us Weekly's source said the split “turned the kids against him as well," but that Pitt “doesn’t blame [Jolie] for everything.”

In August 2024, Shiloh legally filed to have Pitt dropped from her last name. Maddox and Pax reportedly aren't in touch with their father, either.

Pitt has been in a relationship with jewelry executive Ines de Ramon since 2022. In a new interview withGQ, the Fight Club star publicly discussed his girlfriend for the first time.
