The W16 Mistral, Bugatti’s final model to feature its legendary quad-turbocharged W16 engine, undergoes an exhaustive evaluation blending real-world driving and high-speed testing. According to Bugatti Automobiles President Christophe Piochon, the process—refined over two decades—ensures that each Mistral delivers “not just performance, but perfection.”

Crafted at Bugatti’s historic headquarters in Molsheim, each hand-built Mistral is assigned to one of just three test specialists qualified to evaluate the car’s condition using sensory methods that account for 90% of the review. The other 10% relies on proprietary telemetry systems tracking mechanical and performance data in real time.

The test route winds through picturesque Alsatian villages, mountainous terrain, open highways, and even cobblestone streets, challenging the roadster’s agility, powertrain, ride quality, and acoustic refinement. Key assessments include transmission behavior, steering precision, chassis response, and the signature sound of the W16 engine—analyzed even by echo off ancient stone walls.

Noise evaluations, with and without the Mistral’s removable roof, are conducted to assess wind, road, and exhaust acoustics. On Colmar airfield’s private test strip, the car reaches speeds near 300 km/h as emergency systems and structural components like the roof are pushed to extremes.

If any imperfection is detected—no matter how small—the Mistral is returned for adjustments, followed by a secondary test. This cycle repeats until the car is deemed flawless by Bugatti’s standards.

As the brand prepares to shift toward a hybrid V16 future, the W16 Mistral stands as a meticulously validated farewell to an era of unrestrained internal combustion brilliance.
