Bumpy Announces Debut Album ‘Kanana’, Shares Title Track

Bumpy has shared details of her debut solo album, entitled Kanana. It is set for release on Friday, October 3rd via Astral People Recordings. The album’s title translates roughly to “land where the sun sets” in English, and originates in the dialect of the Noongar people. To coincide with the album’s announcement, the Melbourne-based singer-songwriter has shared its second single and title track – following on from May’s ‘Maambakoort’. In a press statement, Bumpy explained that ‘Kanana’ was written about the unifying moment of watching a sunset.
“Everyday people, all around the world, slow down, seek different heights and altitudes, prepare picnics, share meals, time their day to get a glimpse of such beauty,” she said. “This moment is handled with care, for everyone can appreciate the beauty and scale of a sunset. We look at Kanana, and catch a glimpse of unity. I like to imagine what Kanana sees; looking at a sea of people, sharing one moment. If only we could see that every day.” An accompanying music video for ‘Kanana’ has also been shared, directed by Bumpy’s longtime collaborator Emily Dynes. It can be viewed below.

Kanana was recorded with producer Nick Herrera, who is best known for his work with Melbourne funk exports Hiatus Kaiyote (and frontwoman Nai Palm). The album features contributions from the likes of Emma Donovan, Quality Used Cars‘ Isobel Caldwell and Don’t Thank Me, Spank Me!. “I always want to make sure I am doing what I can to uplift community and work in ways that creatively nourish the people around us,” said Bumpy in a press statement regarding the album.

All of it has been really inspiring, and has felt like the album has come to life in all kinds of ways. Often our stories are misinterpreted, or told without us, and I wanted to ensure the safety of my stories and be a part of the full process in bringing this album to life.”
