Over the years, Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie and John Corbett’s Aidan have been through their fair share of ups and downs. They were in love, they were engaged, she had a torrid affair with Big (Chris Noth), they got back together, they had a terrible break up in front on that fountain, and so on. So, of course, it’s no wonder that their reunion in And Just Like That has been just as convoluted.

When the third season of the show began, Carrie and Aidan, who reunited in season 2, were at an odd place. Because of Aidan’s youngest son Wyatt’s struggles at school, Aidan decided he couldn’t move to New York to be with Carrie. So, despite her buying a whole new apartment for them, he proposed a deal: he would move in in five years, when Wyatt is finally off to college.

But, as season 3 moved along, it didn’t take much for Carrie and Aidan’s plans to slowly unravel. Aidan initiated phone sex in episode 1 after asking for no-contact, Carrie traveled to Virginia because she missed him too much, and she appeared to not furnish her home just waiting for him to come back.

Then, in a pindrop moment in episode 6 this week, Aidan revealed he’d been unfaithful.

“I slept with Kathy,” he told Carrie about him and his ex-wife (played by Rosemarie DeWitt). “After the airport, she was just so upset, I mean, we both were, I guess we were just trying to comfort each other,” he said. “It just happened, and it was a mistake, we both said so, and it will never, ever happen again.”

But while Aidan is riddled with guilt, Carrie doesn’t seem to bat an eye. “It’s so odd, but I kind of understand,” she said. “Or maybe I’m in shock, I don’t know. No, I do. I understand how that could happen.”

Longtime viewers know that Carrie isn’t exactly on higher ground when it comes to infidelity. After all, her cheating with Big (when he was married!) lasted quite a while before they were found out. Plus, when she and Aidan shared a kiss in Sex and the City 2, she was consumed by guilt. So why does she not care now?

Well, according to her, him sleeping with Kathy doesn’t exactly go against their 5-year pact.

“I’m so sorry I betrayed you,” Aidan told her. “What do you mean you betrayed me?” Carrie said back. “We agreed to wait for each other and I slept with someone else,” he replied, with Carrie adding, “Well, I didn’t agree to that.”

Carrie then agreed what she had agree to: “That I would be here waiting until you could be with me.”

“You expected me not to sleep with anyone else for five years?” she asked, with Aidan responding with a resounding “Yes.”

With that anwer, Carrie is finally upset. “This is so male- , or medieval, I don’t know. My mind is just racing,” she said. “Sleeping with Kathy because you were upset, I understand. I’m just having a hard time understanding why we have not had this discussion until now.”

Aidan then asks if Carrie’s been so calm because she herself wants to sleep with other people. “No, I don’t want to sleep with over people, I want to sleep with you,” she clarified. “And I still want that, you hear me right?”

After that, instead of continuining the convo and finally setting all the right rules and boundaries for their time apart, they – you guessed it – sleep together. In the next scene together, they’re already as giddy as ever.

So, what really happened here? Well, we’re not exactly sure. While they’re far from being broken up, Aidan is still in a weird place and navigating his own guilt about sleeping with his ex-wife. But, given Carrie’s indifference, it was easy for them to push past it and continue on as if nothing ever happened. But what are the boundaries for them now? Are they open? Are they exclusive? And, perhaps less importantly, is Kathy’s boyfriend Bob okay?
