Colleen Hoover readers are accustomed to her plot twists, but those eagerly awaiting the film adaptation of her massively popular book Verity likely never saw this one coming.

The release date for the film — which stars Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett — has been pushed back to Oct. 2, 2026, after previously being set for May 15, 2026, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The movie will now be in theaters nearly five months later than initially expected.

Verity is based on Hoover’s psychological thriller of the same name. She self-published the novel in 2018 before it was acquired by Grand Central Publishing in 2021 for traditional publication. The New York Times bestseller has sold more than 3 million copies.

The story follows struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh (Johnson) after she is hired by Jeremy Crawford (Hartnett) to complete a book series by his author wife, Verity Crawford (Hathaway), following her involvement in a mysterious accident. Lowen soon discovers alarming secrets about the family’s past in Verity’s unfinished manuscript.

In April, Hathaway, 42, shared an update on the filming process for Verity while teasing the movie’s theatrical release date.

“So Be It… that’s a wrap on the #VerityMovie production!” she captioned an Instagram video of herself holding the novel and a script for film. “See you in theaters May 15, 2026.”

At the time, Hoover, 45, praised Hathaway in the comments section of her post.

“Thank you for everything, it was such a wonderful experience!” she replied. “I can’t wait to see it all come together. You. Are. Amazing.”

Verity is just the latest of Hoover’s books to be adapted for film following 2024’s It Ends With Us starring Blake Lively, Justin Baldoni and Brandon Sklenar. Regretting You — with Allison Williams, McKenna Grace and Dave Franco — is set to arrive in theaters on Oct. 24, 2025, and Reminders of Him — starring Maika Monroe, Tyriq Withers, Rudy Pankow and Lauren Graham — is scheduled to be released on Feb. 13, 2026.
