The next Deftones era is underway: On Thursday (July 10), the veteran hard rockers announced their 10th studio album, private music, and shared its rip-roaring lead single, “My Mind Is a Mountain.” The band’s first album in five years will arrive on Aug. 22 through Reprise/Warner Records.

“My Mind Is a Mountain” is a pummeling new entry in the Sacramento band’s singles catalog, with the quickened tempo and immediate harmonies recalling some of the band’s most beloved early tracks. The song was teased on Deftones’ social accounts throughout the week before its title was revealed on Thursday morning.

Per a press release, Deftones recorded and co-produced private music in multiple locations across California, including Malibu and Joshua Tree, as well as in Nashville. Producer Nick Raskulinecz, who worked on the band’s 2010 album Diamond Eyes and its 2012 follow-up, Koi No Yokan, returned to help create the follow-up to 2020’s Ohms.

Beginning with their 2000 classic White Pony, Deftones have scored six top 10 albums on the Billboard 200. Earlier this year, the band kicked off a North American headline tour that included nights at New York’s Madison Square Garden and the Kia Forum in Los Angeles; the next round of headline dates begins on Aug. 22, the same day as the private music release, in Vancouver, B.C.
