GM Switches Factory From EVs To Gas-Powered Trucks, SUVs

GM has officially announced it will be pivoting the Orion Township assembly plant from EVs to gas-powered trucks and SUVs. This comes as the market for all-electric vehicles has cooled considerably, thanks in no small part to the Trump administration dismantling government mandates forcing consumers into EVs.

Kentucky mom arrested by a state trooper is now suing him.

In other words, GM is responding to market demand instead of government demands, and the people want trucks and SUVs with internal combustion engines.

Orion Township will be assembling Chevy Silverados, GMC Sierras, and Cadillac Escalades in the near future.

Ironically, GM received $480 million in grand funds from the state of Michigan to build EVs at the site. Governor Gretchen Whitmer celebrated the high-tech jobs which would result as the state was leading the government-backed move to electrification.

It’s funny how fast the tables can turn. Now, Governor Whitmer is celebrating this turn of events, trying to pretend like this is what she wanted all along. In an official statement released on Tuesday, she celebrated the “good paying, union auto jobs” that will result from the move.

That’s just Politics 101: when things don’t go your way, twist it into the victory you need to look good.

Production at Orion Township will be in addition to GMC Sierra, Chevy Silverado, and Cadillac Escalade production ongoing at other plants.

GM told the Detroit Free Press production of the trucks and SUVs will begin in early 2027. The automaker cites “strong demand” as the reason for the move, which in turn means demand for EVs is weak, something we’ve known for some time.

The auto giant also knew demand for electric cars was softening as it pushed back plans for the Orion Township plant several times in 2024. It was probably waiting to see if Biden and then Harris would continued the government status quo or if Trump would come in and disrupt things.
