According to the soon-to-be-released (and delightfully dirt-filled) Gwyneth: The Biography, Paltrow and Pitt’s backgrounds were so vastly different that the Emma actress often expressed doubts that she and Pitt were right for each other. She was, after all, a wealthy Upper East Sider with an elite private-school education while he was a former churchgoer from the Ozarks.

“Brad and I had very different upbringings,” Paltrow once told a reporter, in a quote resurfaced by Gwyneth author Amy Odell (a former editor at Cosmo). “When we go to restaurants and order caviar, I have to say to Brad, ‘This is beluga and this is osetra.’”

But Paltrow's arguably classist comment was hardly the meanest thing the Goop founder has ever said about Pitt, whom she dated from 1994 to 1997 and got engaged to in 1996. According to the book, which includes exclusive interviews with more than 220 sources, Paltrow once called Pitt “dumber than a sack of sh--.”

The alleged jab came in 2005, at a dinner with Aerin Lauder, around the time Paltrow became the new face of Estée Lauder's Pleasures fragrance. (Adding insult to injury, Paltrow and Lauder both attended fancy private schools in New York City — Spence and The Chapin School, respectively — so each woman presumably knew which fork to use, when, while gossiping about Pitt.)

Paltrow and Pitt split in the summer of 1997. Although the stars never publicly shared a reason for their breakup, Paltrow told Howard Stern in 2018, “I was such a kid, I was 22 when we met. It’s taken me until 40 to get my head out of my ass. You can’t make that decision when you’re 22 years old . . . I wasn’t ready, and he was too good for me.”
