This could be Hyundai’s quickest car ever

One of the most eagerly anticipated performance EVs has finally been revealed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Say hello to the Hyundai Ioniq 6 N sedan, which follows the lauded Ioniq 5 N. The latter has quickly become one of the most respected EVs, as it managed to provide a level of driver engagement that’s difficult to achieve without a gas engine. With similar tricks up its sleeve and attention-grabbing looks, the Ioniq 6 N will look to replicate this recipe in sedan form.

Back in April, Hyundai revealed the facelifted Ioniq 6 sedan. From its egg-shaped roofline to its Robocop-like front lighting, it’s got a futuristic boldness to it that is sure to provoke some kind of reaction when you see it. The Ioniq 6 N takes the drama up several notches, starting with the signature Performance Blue paintwork we’ve seen on other N cars. In this case, it has a pearl finish.

Various motorsport-inspired elements can be found around the exterior, such as the swan neck rear wing that helps with high-speed stability. The fenders are wider, there are red accents on the front lip and side sills, and it rides on larger 20–inch wheels. These are wrapped in special Pirelli P-Zero 5 tires that have been exclusively developed for this car.

Not everyone will love the unusual look, but performance cars are not meant to fade into the background, and the Ioniq 6 N is at no risk of that happening.

Inside, the car gets a black look with Performance Blue accents. N badging, special seats, and a wide display screen create a sporty, high-tech look. One of Hyundai’s interesting inclusions is the N Ambient Shift Light, a lighting function that matches the “shift points” of the N e-Shift system.

Brutal Power And Performance

Equipped with dual electric motors, the Ioniq 6 N has a total output of 601 horsepower. That’s only the normal output, though: With the N Grin Boost function, peak output rises to an incredible 641 hp, matching the Ioniq 5 N. The result is a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time of just 3.2 seconds. The shorter 0-60 mph run will likely shave another tenth of so off that time. Flat out, the sedan will reach nearly 160 mph.

Those numbers are ever so slightly behind the Tesla Model 3 Performance, which can reach 60 mph in 2.9 seconds and go on to a top speed of 163 mph. None of that means the Tesla is automatically better to drive, though, as Hyundai has included all the toys from the Ioniq 5 N to create an emotive driving experience. Here’s just a few of them:

N e-Shift: As mentioned, this simulates the gearshifts of a normal gas-powered car.

N Grin Boost: For 10 seconds, this function will maximize acceleration and result in the peak power output.

N Drift Optimizer: In a controlled environment, this function makes it easier to enjoy smooth drifts.

N Pedal: This feature improves cornering agility with three different settings for a faster tuck-in motion.

N Torque Distribution: This function has no less than 11 levels of adjustability, allowing drivers to control the distribution of torque between the front and rear.

N Battery: Using this feature, the battery can be preconditioned for different scenarios, such as drag, sprint, and endurance, depending on how the car will be used.

Although it all sounds a bit gimmicky, the Ioniq 5 N demonstrated that the reality is that of a fun, absorbing EV that is every bit as entertaining as an ICE performance car.

Hyundai

In terms of the battery, the Ioniq 6 N has an 84-kWh high-voltage one that can be recharged from 10% to 80% in 18 minutes, using a DC fast charger.

“With Ioniq 6 N, Hyundai N aims to elevate its offerings, enticing drivers with electric powertrains that offer high-performance enthusiasts a thrilling new avenue to electrify their passion both on the road and the track,” said José Muñoz, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company.

Expected to cost around $65,000 and to arrive in the USA next year, the Ioniq 6 N lives up to our lofty expectations on paper. And, given that it’s a lower, sleeker vehicle than the already fantastic Ioniq 5 N, we expect it to be a blast to drive when we get behind the wheel. It's this car that the electric BMW M3 will have to be watch out for when it arives.
