“It's Always Sunny” star Rob McElhenney explains 'kinda douchey' choice to change his name

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney knows you think it's "kinda douchey" for him to change his name to Rob Mac, but here's the thing — he doesn't really care.
The actor took to social media Tuesday to explain his decision in a characteristically comical video captioned simply, "I said what I said."
"Okay, I'm going to dedicate exactly one minute to this. Start the clock," he began, cueing an onscreen timer as he did so. "Yes, I'm shortening my name to Rob Mac. Mostly a stage name, but I digress. Is it kinda douchey? Sure."

As he spoke, clips of people flubbing his name played in the background.
Moreover, McElhenney isn't the only one who's been victimized by his name. Ever generous with fans, the actor claimed that he's looking out for their best interests with the name change as well, quipping, "More importantly, it means thousands of you have had minutes of your life stolen by me because of my last name."
Except, as he pointed out, McElhenney isn't really his family's "f---ing name." Though he admitted he loves his family and the shared "heritage" inherent in a common surname, it's all a bit ironic, because, "Not only have many generations changed the spelling, the current one was just given to my ancestor by a government official who decided that this was now the spelling."
As proof, McElhenney provided an old photo of his great-great-grandmother featuring a handwritten caption that said her name was Bridget McIllhenny. McElhenney then concluded that "times have changed and most people call me Rob Mac anyways. My family knows me and loves me regardless of how many syllables I have, and that's the only thing I really care about. There are so many things going on in the world, and this is a silly one to continue to waste your time with."

A representative for the Wrexham AFC co-owner confirmed to Entertainment Weekly on Friday that he had filed to legally change his name to Rob Mac, which is how he will be credited in professional projects moving forward.
