July TV Preview: 10 New Shows to Watch

Every month should have a slogan. March got “in like a lion, out like a lamb.” Then, there’s “April showers bring May flowers,” and, as quaint and weather-focused (and often inaccurate) as these are, we need more!

So what words best fit July? “Visit Venus” feels like an accurate description of the heatwave that ushered in this month, or we could opt for something philosophical like “The year is half full.” In TV terms, July marks the next phase of Emmys as the nominations are announced July 15, and fans are still reeling from the late-June premieres of “The Bear” Season 4 and “Squid Game 3.” We’re also officially halfway through the year, which is the perfect time to check out IndieWire’s Summer TV Preview or Best TV of 2025 (so far).

In new shows, this month offers the episodic adaptation of Esi Edugyan’s “Washington Black,” as well as semi-autobiographical comedies from Lena Dunham and Leanne Morgan (Netflix’s “Too Much” and “Leanne,” respectively). Netflix and Prime Video debut new true crime docuseries, one about a woman who disappeared from a cruise ship in 1998 and the other about the 2022 Idaho college murders. There’s also another “Dexter” reboot incoming with Michael C. Hall fully reprising the character, and a range of cop shows from “Bosch”-universe release “Ballard” to “Untamed” with Eric Bana and “The Institute” with Ben Barnes.

Personally, I will be devoting the first weekend of the month to “All the Sharks,” a Netflix competition that is both exactly what its title suggests and exactly what I need. Join me if you’d like, and if not, I’ll see you in August!

Here are 10 new shows to watch in July 2025.
