Porsche has doubled the number of all-wheel-drive 911 models from three to now six, giving consumers more choices. That’s great news for anyone who’s a fan of the level of control AWD provides, whether it’s to drive in inclement conditions or just the overall feel of it versus rear-wheel drive.
Porsche 911 S/T serial number conspiracy theories blown apart.
The three new AWD Porsche 911 models recently announced are the Carrera 4S, Targa 4S, and Carrera 4S Cabriolet. It’s no wonder Porsche is going in this direction with the company saying about half of shoppers who opt for a Carrera S choosing an AWD car.
While you might be thinking Porsche owners should garage their 911 during the winter months, the fact is in some areas rain can roll in without warning any day of the year, even multiple times in the same day.
Every automaker’s all-wheel-drive system approach is different. Porsche designs its with a rear-wheel bias, with power shifted towards the front in the even of slippage detected by the PTM system.
The clutch assembly for the car’s front differential is water-cooled and controlled electromechanically, just like in previous Carrera 4s models. But Porsche says the gear ratio has been adjusted slightly, giving the AWD system a bit of a different feel.
Another big change is the engine. The 3.0-liter flat-six with twin turbos produces about 473-horsepower, a significant bump in power. Porsche claims revising the intercooler using the layout for the 911 Turbo has resulted in the increased performance.
Bolted up to that engine is an eight-speed PDK. With that setup, the 911 Carrera 4S Coup can do 0-60 mph in just 3.3 seconds, when outfitted with the optional Sport Chrono Package. With performance surging ahead in the auto industry, these kinds of advancements are necessary to keep up with the competition.
