Freshman Netflix shows “Pulse” and “The Residence” have both been canceled, Variety has learned. Both series aired just one season at the streamer.

“Pulse” premiered on April 3 and debuted with 6.5 million views on the Netflix Top 10, followed by 8.5 million, 3.2 million and 2 million views in the weeks after that. The series received a ratings of 48% on Rotten Tomatoes, with Variety’s review noting “a poorly formatted narrative, an appalling depiction of sexual harassment and a few insufferable characters [that] don’t exactly make for a pleasurable watch.”

The series also suffered due to the proximity of its premiere to the finale of “The Pitt” at Max, with the latter medical drama scoring much higher with critics and audiences alike.

“Pulse” starred Willa Fitzgerald as Dr. Danny Simms, a third-year resident at a Level 1 trauma center Miami, who is unexpectedly promoted after beloved chief resident Xander Phillips (Colin Woodell) is suspended. Per the official logline, a hurricane forces the hospital into lockdown, and “Danny and Phillips must find a way to work together — even as the bombshell details of a complicated and illicit romance between them begin to spill out. The rest of the ER is left to process the fallout of their relationship while balancing their own challenges, both personal and professional, as they work under the pressure of life-or-death stakes.”

Besides Fitzgerald and Woodell, the cast included Justina Machado, Jack Bannon, Jessie T. Usher, Jessy Yates, Chelsea Muirhead, Daniela Nieves, Néstor Carbonell, Jessica Rothe, Santiago Segura, Ash Santos and Arturo Del Puerto.

Zoe Robyn was the creator of the series and served as co-showrunner and executive producer. Carlton Cuse was also the co-showrunner and executive producer. Bradley Gardner, Emma Forman, Michael Klick, and Kate Dennis executive produced.

“The Residence” hailed from Shondaland and boasted an ensemble cast that included: Uzo Aduba, Giancarlo Esposito, Edwina Findley, Molly Griggs, Jason Lee, Ken Marino, Al Mitchell, Dan Perrault, Bronson Pinchot, Julieth Restrepo, Mel Rodriguez, Susan Kelechi Watson, Isiah Whitlock Jr. and Mary Wiseman.

“The Residence” debuted at number two in the Netflix English TV Top 10 list back in March, opening with 6.4 million views. It ultimately spent four weeks on the chart. The show did better with critics than “Pulse,” holding an 85% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The series was inspired by the book “The Residence” by Kate Andersen Brower. The logline states, “132 rooms. 157 suspects. One dead body. One wildly eccentric detective. One disastrous State Dinner. The Residence is a screwball whodunnit set in the upstairs, downstairs, and backstairs of the White House, among the eclectic staff of the world’s most famous mansion.”

Paul William Davies served as creator, showrunner, writer and executive producer of “The Residence,” which is also executive produced by Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers.
