Scarlett Johansson recently discussed how her casting experiences in movies have changed over the years and how she is no longer chosen for ‘desirability.’ Early in her career, the actress gained attention for mainly playing the gorgeous love interest of male protagonists. However, she has since transitioned into playing complex characters with their own agency. This includes projects like Marriage Story, Lucy, and Fly Me to the Moon.

So, what did Johansson say about the changes in her casting in movies? Here’s everything to know about the same.

Scarlett Johansson talks about not being casted for ‘desirability’

The Black Widow actress explained in a recent interview that early in her career, she would mainly be offered roles focusing on her character’s ‘desirability’ or sexual appeal for male co-stars.

“But when I was younger, a lot of the roles I was offered, or I went for, had their ambitions or character arcs revolving around their own desirability,” Scarlett Johansson told The Times. “Or the male gaze, or a male-centred story.” She stated that her looks-based casting has now become “less frequent,” adding that “something has shifted.”

The Transformers star noted that the “messaging” was now “different.” She stressed that there were now “many more role models” and women “visible” in top positions. Moreover, Johansson further mentioned that opportunities to play multi-dimensional characters in movies have now “increased” for her.

Furthermore, the two-time Oscar nominee revealed she would now turn down roles that felt “deeply unfulfilling.” She did so as she wished to avoid being typecast. The Jurassic World Rebirth actress stated that she was aware of becoming “irrelevant” at any point in her career. She noted that despite this, she would wait for roles to prove her acting abilities, beyond being the “eye candy.”

The 40-year-old further noted that she had to become “comfortable with the idea” that getting a good role takes time. “Which is hard when you’re a young actor, but at that time I didn’t have any children,” she added.

Previously, Scarlett Johansson addressed her casting based on looks on The Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard podcast in 2022. She admitted that she once thought she could not branch out into different roles after the industry “hypersexualized” her. Johansson added that she became “objectified” and ‘pigeonholed.” She also felt she wasn’t offered roles she wanted to do.
