Most of the time, when a musical artist or band releases a compilation of their biggest hits, it comes after decades of delivering chart-topping tunes. When The Eagles came out with their first collection of previously-released songs, on the other hand — named, fittingly, Their Greatest Hits — it was less than ten years into their mega-successful career...but that didn't stop the record from going on to become the bestselling classic rock album of all time.
Featuring ten tracks from their first four albums (including such iconic tunes as "Take It Easy," "Lyin' Eyes" and "Witchy Woman"), Their Greatest Hits was released on February 17, 1976, and went on to spend five weeks at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 (though it stayed on the charts for a whopping 455 weeks). In 2018, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified the album 38x platinum. (By comparison, two of the other top-selling classic rock albums in U.S. history — AC/DC's Back in Black and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon — have been certified 27x Platinum and 14x platinum, respectively.)
As Collider reported, the members of The Eagles weren't initially enthusiastic about releasing a greatest hits compilation, and complained that the album “nothing more than a ploy by the record companyto sell product without having to pay additional production costs.” Of course, the album's success exceeded expectations (and then some), even inspiring an industry-wide trend, with bands like Journey and Aerosmith going on to release super-popular collections of their own biggest hits.

Schmit). As of 2025, the band's combined net worth was estimated to be $400 million, according to Finance Monthly, with publishing rights split between Henley, the late Glenn Frey's estate, and Warner Music Group.
With so many loyal fans out there, it's no wonder The Eagles are still performing over 50 years since they first started making music. In April, they announced the final shows of their ongoing residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas, scheduling their last dates for October 2025, per Variety.
