Watch Ben Gravy Chase His Novelty Wave White Whale: A Massive Cruise Ship

Ben Gravy is quite possibly the world’s foremost expert on novelty waves. Yet, as he described at the top of his latest video, cruise ships remain an elusive quarry for him.
“Cruise ships have been the hardest thing for me to catch,” he explained at the beginning of his latest video. “I’ve gotten some amazing tanker waves and I’ve gotten some amazing ferry waves. Cruise ships have proven to be one of the most difficult waves to ride. But today, we’re gonna bust the myth. We’re gonna find the dream, and we are gonna fully nuke it.”
His original target was a cruise ship operated by Disney Cruise Line called Disney Dream. The massive vessel, weighing in at 129,000 gross tons and capable of holding up to 4,000 passengers, was departing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on its way to the Bahamas. Shortly after the events of Gravy’s video, the Disney Dream would also find itself at the center of a dramatic rescue at sea. As the vessel left the Bahamas on Sunday, a father and daughter went overboard. As the New York Times reports, crew members were able to rescue the pair, which is a relatively rare occurrence in incidences where cruise ship passengers go overboard.

Instead, he ended up catching rides on two other cruise ships, the Celebrity Reflection and Jewel of the Seas. Still, it was an experience that kept his unquenchable stoke alive.
“I didn’t quite get the wave exactly how I wanted to, but no denying it, absolutely epic cruise ship wave, probably the second best cruise ship wave of my life,” summed up Gravy.
