What’s on TV: Attack on London: Hunting the 7/7 Bombers, To Catch a Stalker, and more

Attack on London: Hunting the 7/7 BombersNetflixThere’s only one way to open a 20th-anniversary docu-series about the investigation into the July 7 terrorist attack on London’s transport system that left 52 dead and hundreds more maimed and wounded amid scenes of chaos in the capital. That’s with the horror of the bombings themselves. So steel yourself for graphic accounts – from victims to emergency services personnel who were first on the scene – of the carnage and panic that took place deep underground on the Tube, and on one bus in Tavistock Square.
The sense of fear, confusion and growing realisation of what had happened is exceptionally well captured. As is the fact that the hunt for the bombers was well underway before anyone realised that these were the first suicide bombings on British soil. Even then, the dread that these four home-grown terrorists might not have acted alone led to the biggest criminal investigation ever undertaken in the UK. This superb series features plenty of previously unseen footage, and testimony from many of those affected or in leadership roles, including then-Prime Minister Tony Blair. GO

Such Brave GirlsBBC Three, 10.05pm; BBC One, 11.40pm; NI/Scot, 12.10amWinner of the Best Scripted Comedy Bafta in 2024, Kat Sadler’s magnificently cynical series returns. Turning the screws on all the elements that made the first one such an appalling delight, it mines humour from the very darkest moments in a manner that recalls Julia Davis at her most gleefully, hilariously misanthropic.
AdvertisementAdvertisement#«R2pekkr8lb2m7nfblbH1» iframe AdvertisementAdvertisement#«R4pekkr8lb2m7nfblbH1» iframeWe begin tonight as Josie’s (Sadler) apparent happiness – loved-up and at art school – is instantly, literally hijacked by sister Billie (Sadler’s real-life sister Lizzie Davidson) and mum Deb (Louise Brealey), who whisk her off to the sort of major family event that would act as the climax of less confident series. Josie, as ever, is at the bottom of everyone’s list of priorities apart from clingy fiancé Seb’s (Freddie Meredith); Billie is channelling her daddy issues into another doomed relationship with an older man (Daniel Ryan); and Deb continues to manoeuvre hapless boyfriend Dev (Paul Bazely) into a long-term commitment until an old flame turns up with dubious motives. At every turn, their most monstrous traits (it’s a long list) undermine them, with narcissism ramped up to nuclear levels. Hilarious and original. GT

Fern Britton: Inside the VetsITV1, 2pmThe sports- and repeats-packed summer schedules push us into the comforting arms of daytime television in search of freshness and novelty, finding a modicum of both in this new series in which queen of the airwaves (or, as she’s described here, “cat mum and all-round animal lover”) Fern Britton follows the ups and downs of day-to-day life at a busy vets’ practice in Bristol.
AdvertisementAdvertisement#«R34ekkr8lb2m7nfblbH1» iframe AdvertisementAdvertisement#«R54ekkr8lb2m7nfblbH1» iframeIt is gentle, aaaw-inspiring stuff for the most part, following multiple pet patients – the fluffier and more wide-eyed the better – as they undergo a range of veterinary treatments, from routine vaccinations and flea prevention to dentistry and neutering. Plus, the occasional critical care emergency and heart-in-mouth operation to keep us on edge, or from simply succumbing to a longed-for post-lunch snooze.
Unsurprisingly, the pets’ anxious owners also figure prominently.
