Astronomy enthusiasts have another reason to look up this summer as July’s full moon — known as the “Buck Moon” — is set to illuminate the night sky.
When is July's full moon?
The full moon set to rise on July 10, 2025.
Why is it called a 'Buck Moon?'

The nickname, rooted in seasonal wildlife patterns and folklore, refers to the period when male deer, or bucks, begin regrowing their antlers after shedding them earlier in the year. At the height of this growth phase, antlers can lengthen by as much as a quarter-inch per day, according to the Farmers’ Almanac.
Like other full moons, July’s lunar event is rich in traditional names passed down through generations. The Buck Moon is also known as the “Thunder Moon,” for the season’s frequent storms, as well as the “Salmon Moon” and “Berry Moon,” reflecting peak salmon runs and berry harvests in parts of North America.
How can you view the 'Buck Moon?'
The moon will appear full to the naked eye and can be viewed best by looking toward the southeastern horizon after sunset.
