The Treasure Coast got its name from the 1715 fleet of Spanish ships that wrecked in a hurricane on July 31 and sank nearby. Here are five shipwrecks to explore in or near the area.
S.S. Breconshire: 300-foot ship nicknamed "Boiler Wreck," 300 yards off coast in Vero Beach; sank in 1894
Urca de Lima: Near Pepper Park in Fort Pierce, 200 yards offshore in 10-15 feet of water; all that remains of 1715 treasure fleet
Georges Valentine: Near House of Refuge in Stuart, 100 feet from shore; sank in violent storm in 1904
Lofthus: 1 mile north of Boynton Inlet, 175 yards offshore of Manalapan in 15-20 feet of water; sank in 1898
SS Copenhagen: Offshore of Pompano Beach in 15-30 feet of water; sank in 1900 after crashed into reef
