Birdz Reunites With Fred Leone For New Single ‘Wanya Nyin Yanmanj’

Birdz and his cousin Fred Leone have shared a new collaborative single entitled ‘Wanya Nyin Yanmanj’. It is the first new music of 2025 for both artists, and follows on from their 2024 collaboration ‘Brother’. The song’s title stems from a phrase in the pair’s native Butchulla language, which roughly translates in English to an informal greeting in the spirit of “how are you going?”.
The song was produced by Trials, best known as a member of A.B. Original and Funkoars, and also features a spoken-word contribution from Uncle Richard Bell – a Kamilaroi, Kooma, Jiman and Gurang Gurang artist and veteran activist. In a press statement, Birdz and Leone offered this in regards to their latest single: “Still we sit, still we rise. You said no to our voice, but you can’t silence our truth. Black deaths, no justice. No change, but we stay strong. This land remembers. So do we.”

“These lyrics – across all platforms, across all genres of Indigenous music in this country – are created and designed in a way to start the conversation,” said Leone. “It’s about listening to the information through lingo, taking that information and then helping you to form a worldview.” Birdz, for his part, added: “It forces people to look themselves in the mirror and go, ‘Where do I really stand on this? What do I really believe? Where do I come from?'”

A lot of the time, that conversation can be challenging.”
Tomorrow (July 5th), the duo are headed to Wonthuggi in regional Victoria to perform at the town’s Union Theatre. It serves as a pre-party of sorts ahead of the official launch of NAIDOC Week, which officially kicks off on Sunday, July 6th. All remaining tickets for the show are available here.
