Electric Corvette Hypercar Gets More Life

GM’s Advanced Design studios are at it again, producing renderings of yet another all-electric Corvette hypercar. While the last one, which caused a huge stir, hailed from the UK studio back in March, this latest iteration comes via the company’s Pasadena, California studio. That’s why it’s being called the California Corvette.

There already is a Corvette hypercar.

That’s right, GM seems to think it’s still 1962 and people aren’t tired of Californians filtering into their states and ruining everything. Talk about not reading the room.

But there’s a much bigger story with the so-called California Corvette and its UK sibling. Both are obviously radical departures from the C8 Corvette’s form factor, flaunting the fact they’re all-electric.

The first one sparked a mountain of speculation that GM is in fact working on an EV version of its beloved sports car, only it would a hypercar in the truest sense.

Perhaps sensing a swell of pushback against such an elitist direction for what historically has been an everyman’s performance car, Corvette Chief Engineer Tony Roma spoke out recently, saying there never were serious plan for an all-electric Corvette.

But after we ran our story with quotes from Roma, which we think spelled out his feelings rather clearly, a representative from GM reached out to try steadying the ark, clarifying what Roma must have meant by his comments.

This squares with rumors we’ve heard of an internal war going on inside the halls of GM over an all-electric hypercar version of the C9 Corvette. Some apparently think it’s the way for the American automaker to prove its engineering prowess versus the likes of Koenigsegg and Ferrari, while others believe it will serve to only alienate the core customer base for the Corvette.

Another Corvette concept design study is set to be released later this year, making three total. It will be from another Advanced Design studio, although GM has revealed which one. What’s left is Michigan, South Korea, and China, but we’re expecting yet another all-electric hypercar like the other two.
