IndyCar driver Sting Ray Robb showed up at the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy wearing a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey. The crowd loved it as the 23-year-old racecar driver appeared at the track wearing their hometown colors, high-fiving IndyCar fans as he was about to prepare for the race.
See how a drag racing Camaro was obliterated in the blink of an eye.
We’ve seen cross-sport support like this before, but this one feels different. While it does happen in motorsports, it’s not as common as NFL players showing up at press conferences wearing MLB hats or vice versa.
Then again, Sting Ray Robb is a different sort of guy. The young racer’s real name is Sting Ray Robb, his parents naming him after the Corvette Stingray. He started racing in 2016 at the tender age of 14 and broke into IndyCar two years ago at 21.
But courting the home crowd is always a good move. Because hockey is king in Toronto, wearing a Maple Leafs jersey, especially one with Auston Matthew’s name on the back, is a surefire way to win the people over.
It’s similar to the principle in the first Gladiator movie: you can win but if you don’t win the crowd, you’re not truly free. When drivers are able to amass big followings regardless of their on-track performance, they become iconic.
And iconic drivers are able to sell merchandise, get endorsement deals, and enjoy greater financial freedom. Plus, they’re having a better time.
Even though Sting Ray finished in position 17 after starting at position 25, he’s a true winner in the eyes of many Canadians. The young driver seems to have already learned this key lesson well.
