In a display of banal German efficiency, the first Porsche Charging Lounge in Switzerland was recently unveiled. It literally looks drab and gray, especially when compared to the funky retro-futuristic Tesla Diner in Los Angeles.
Speeding Porsches earn 34 tickets in one traffic stop.
The starkness between the two couldn’t be greater and shows what happens when a brand takes itself too seriously. We’re big fans of Porsche, but sometimes the Germans are just so uptight, it takes the joy out of everything.
Instead of a vibrant exterior, the building is gray and modern, and just plain. Like the Tesla Diner, it features fast chargers outside, which are available at any time of day or night. Plus, there’s a seating area with speakers playing music, if you want to wait there when the weather’s nice.

But go inside and you can enjoy snacks, coffee, water, and the restroom. Plus, there’s free WiFi. In other words, it’s like the dealership service department waiting area, only it’s not at the dealership. The only thing missing is CNN playing on a big screen TV mounted to the wall. How fun (that’s sarcasm, people).
In the meantime, the Tesla Diner features an outdoor movie screen, robots serving popcorn, comfort food, neon lighting, and actual fun. It’s a little crazy and seems like a great way to unwind while you’re on a road trip.
Plus, the Porsche Charging Lounge requires a special card only given to Porsche owners to enter. But the Tesla Diner is open to everyone.
There are already seven Porsche Charging Lounges in Europe with five in Germany, one in Austria, and of course on in Switzerland. We assume they will continued to spread, but Elon Musk has made it clear that in all likelihood the Tesla Diner will become a global business.
The differences between these two approaches to charging destinations owned by automakers is like night and day.
