Sierra And Yukon To Become PHEVs For The First Time

GMC has already launched an all-electric version of its full-size pickup with the Sierra EV, and a Yukon EV is likely to follow at some point. But the vast majority of buyers approach electrification with trepidation, and given how expensive and inadequately served by infrastructure EVs tend to be, it's no wonder that hybrids are proving much more popular. General Motors' premium brand has taken note, and according to Automotive News, the Sierra and Yukon will become available with plug-in hybrid powertrains from 2027 for the first time.

PHEVs To Arrive As Part Of Refresh

The publication notes that GM intends to ramp up production of the current Sierra at its Orion Township plant in Michigan, which was originally supposed to be retooled for EV production. This plant will now produce gas-powered trucks and SUVs in 2027, following the announcement of a $4 billion investment in U.S. manufacturing plants by GM last month, and this seems like the perfect time to introduce a mid-cycle refresh for the Sierra. The publication expects that the facelifted Sierra will be followed by an updated heavy-duty model in 2028.

Naturally, styling and tech updates will arrive with the new electrified powertrain options. These are expected to make their way to the Sierra EV in 2028, while the Yukon and Yukon XL are reportedly set to get their own redesign and PHEVs in 2029.

The report goes on to say that the full-size Hummer EV, which arrived at the end of 2021, will get its own refresh in 2028 for both the pickup and the SUV, while the midsize Acadia (which recently became available in Denali form) could be refreshed a year earlier. The Canyon pickup will reportedly get its update in 2029, around which time the Terrain will probably be revised, too. The fate of the dated Savana van seems undecided, but it's expected to live on alongside the Chevy Express at least through next year, despite earlier reports that 2025 was the final model year on sale. Depending on how much demand there is, GMC could well keep it alive a little longer.

The third-gen Canyon arrived in 2022 for the 2023 model year, while the Acadia's third coming was revealed in 2023 for the 2024 model year, so the timing indicated in the report matches with traditional product cycles. Still, GM hasn't confirmed any of this yet, so things could still change.
