For starters, the season’s official logline tells us that Maddie “must face the dangerous mystery behind Split River High School in order to save her best friend who might be lost forever.” That best friend, of course, is Maddie’s BFF Simon, who found himself in spiritual limbo at the end of Season 2.

“Simon has had access to a world that other people have not,” executive producer Oliver Goldstick told TVLine after the finale. “He’s aware of another reality besides the one we all see on a daily basis. So we felt like, if you spent this much time trying to save somebody else and you had immersed yourself so deeply into that world, could you be sucked into the vortex of that until you were trapped as well?”
