Jaguar Land Rover is recalling 20,999 examples of its most popular model over defective airbags.

The recall, which the U.S. Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published on July 7, 2025, impacts Land Rover's Range Rover Evoque models manufactured between 2021 and 2025.

Details on the recall, campaign number 25V454000, can be found here.

The passenger airbag could tear when it deploys in an accident, which means the airbag may not adequately protect occupants during a crash, according to the NHTSA.

The problem could also cause hot gasses to escape and burn occupants, according to the recall notice.

Notices to owners of the affected Evoques should expect to start receiving letters in the mail starting August 29, and dealers will replace the defective airbag module free of charge.

Owners concerned if their vehicle is impacted by the recall can call Land Rover's customer service line, 800-637-6837, or search the NHTSA's website using their license plate, vehicle identification number (VIN), or by entering their year, make and model.

The Evoque is Land Rover's least expensive model in its Range Rover lineup. But it's not cheap by any measure, starting at just under $50,000 with no options, according to Land Rover's website.

The luxury SUV brand is not well-known for reliability though, so the recall may not come as a surprise to owners.

Land Rover is ranked 30th in reliability, owner satisfaction, safety and road-testing by Consumer Reports in a December 2024 report. That's 30th out of 32 brands.

The brand ranked also 14th out of 15 luxury brands, only beating out electric SUV and truck manufacturer Rivian, which only began shipping vehicles out in 2021.

Land Rover is currently part of automaker group Jaguar Land Rover, which is owned by Indian company Tata Motors.

Still, Land Rover is not a manufacturer synonymous with reliability.

"Despite off-road prowess, the brand gained notoriety for building SUVs that broke down frequently and expensively. Even today, the brand retains its reputation, as Consumer Reports’ reliability data confirms. Used Land Rovers are risky purchases," Consumer Reports notes.
