Borderlands 4 Developer Breaks Down New Siren Character, Vex

EmmettGames2025-07-229330

Borderlands 4 gave players a look at some of the design choices that were made with Vex, the playable Dark Siren and the first Vault Hunter that the team worked on for the upcoming entry. The Borderlands 4 art team discussed how Vex's Siren action skills change the colors of her tattoos and her abilities, including corrosive weapon effects and her Phase Pets.

Vex is the latest Siren to arrive in the Borderlands franchise, with each entry featuring a Siren as a playable Vault Hunter. Vex is one of four playable Vault Hunters that will be available once Borderlands 4 launches in September, with another two coming as DLC at a later date. Compared to characters like Amon the Forge Knight or Harlowe the Gravitar, Vex's dark clothing and abilities to summon various Phase Pets and Clones to fight alongside her make her a unique addition to the Borderlands character roster. In short, Vex's unique Dark Siren powers give several long-range options in solo and co-op modes.

After sharing a look at what Borderlands 4 players can do when playing as Vex, Gearbox Software's art team shared a few choices that players can see when playing as the Dark Siren. In the fourth episode of Beyond The Borderlands, Borderlands 4 art team members Max Davenport and Ashley Lyons broke down how Siren's art design was integrated into her weapon and skill effects. Lyons stated that, while Vex is known for her dark and edgy appearance, some of the colors used for her action skills included deep purples and bright pinks as a sharp contrast. Also, Vex's action skill will alter the colors and elements of various weapons. Lyons used a Tediore weapon with a corrosive element as an example, and said that using one of Vex's abilities would turn that weapon green and change its elemental damage.

Borderlands 4 Shares The Design Choices Behind Vex The Dark Siren

Davenport said that the same color design choices behind Vex's action skills are reflected in her tattoos, which are one of the defining features of Borderlands' most powerful Sirens, including Myra and Lilith. Vex's tattoos will also change colors depending on her action skills. Vex's various Phase pets and clones will also change colors. The Borderlands 4 designers also stated that Vex's Incarnate wings came later in the game's development, including small details that helped define the appearance of the Dark Siren.

Though Vex's dark demeanor makes her stand out among other Borderlands 4 characters, her abilities and color-swapping powers add some brightness to a gritty and outlandish environment. It remains to be seen how many Borderlands 4 players will choose Vex as their Vault Hunter in the upcoming title.
