’I Need to Get a Console First’ Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Actor Charlie Cox Finally Wants to Play the Game

Charlie Cox, the actor behind the popular Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 character Gustave, has revealed that he now wants to play the hit RPG—though he needs to “get a console first” because he hasn’t played a game since Super Mario 64. Although Cox already explained he’s not a gamer, it was still surprising that the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 actor hasn’t tried out the immensely popular game he plays a crucial part in—though that’s about to change.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been making waves in the industry since its release in April 2025. The game introduced a bunch of fascinating concepts for RPGs’ turn-based combat mechanics, alongside engaging level design and a captivating story. Sandfall developed the game over approximately five years, and the project involved a small team of around 30 developers, with additional support from subcontractors and voice actors such as Jennifer English—recognized for her performances in Baldur’s Gate 3—and the popular Daredevil actor Charlie Cox, among others. While the game is a must-play for any RPG fan, Charlie Cox hadn’t played it—even after portraying such a crucial character in the story. But now, Cox seems to have changed his mind.

Gustave is fantastic in Expedition 33, but Charlie Cox is right—the world wouldn't praise anyone else in his shoes
The reaction to Charlie Cox's recent comments about Expedition 33 and Gustave is indicative of a trend that is going in the wrong direction.
Posts 15During a recent Q&A session at GalaxyCon, Clair Obscur’s Gustave actor revealed to fans that he wants to play the game—but “I need to get a console first,” he admitted. He also mentioned how amazed he was by the game’s visuals, recalling his time at the studio, where he’d think, “This is beautiful.” He added how surprised he was by how far games have come graphically since Super Mario 64, because that’s “probably the last computer game I played,” he confessed.
Gustave Actor Charlie Cox Hasn’t Played a Game Since Super Mario 64
Cox mentioned again that he feels like a fraud for not having played Clair Obscur yet, and went on to praise Sandfall for creating the game. He also highlighted the studio’s small size and emphasized how thrilled he is that the game is a front-runner for Game of the Year.
CloseWhile there are some strong contenders for 2025’s best game, Clair Obscur is undoubtedly one of the candidates, alongside Death Stranding 2 and others. Addressing the game’s success in May, the Clair Obscur director shared advice for developers, stating that they should try to make games they would truly want to play instead of focusing on what people would like. Apparently, this is a key factor for Sandfall—and its game is just about to get non-gamer actor Charlie Cox to give it a try.
