Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War Fans Upset by Changes to Intro Cinematic

Gamers have been quite mad at one change made by Relic Entertainment to Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Definitive Edition’s intro cinematic: the removal of the classic “Space Marine scream.” The upcoming remaster of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War is being eagerly awaited by the fanbase, but some hardcore players were not happy about the removal of the iconic moment.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War is a real-time strategy game originally released for PC in 2004. When considering the expansion packs for the original title and its sequels, the Dawn of War series sold over seven million copies. Due to this success, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War is widely considered one of the best Warhammer games of the early 2000s.

Fans were originally excited when Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Definitive Edition was announced by Relic Entertainment, but opinions have quickly shifted after the game’s intro cinematic was unveiled. According to IGN, the new high-quality version of Dawn of War’s intro movie has been improved in several ways, but is lacking the iconic “Space Marine scream,” which has appeared in memes among the community over the years. Instead of using the original scream, the audio was changed to another battle cry, which felt more generic to fans. This enraged the community, with fans saying that the devs “ruined” the remaster, and that there was no need to add anything to the game, as it would make it much less cohesive. Others also called the audio “awful” and even said, seemingly jokingly, that leaving out the scream was “a crime against humanity.”

Fans Are Furious Devs Replaced Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War's 'Space Marine Scream'

Luckily, there’s still hope for fans. IGN reached out to Relic Entertainment, and the devs explained that the scream was removed due to having considerably lower audio quality than other files used in the sequence. However, the devs teased that they may have a solution in the future. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Definitive Edition will be out on August 14, and it’s possible that the famous meme scream could be added back to the game when it’s finally released.

The upcoming release of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Definitive Edition is part of Relic Entertainment’s new strategy after splitting from Sega in 2024. Revealed earlier this year, the new strategy is to focus on smaller titles, classic revivals, and new franchises while working with smaller budgets, which could diminish development time. Hopefully, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Definitive Edition will be a hit and help the company to follow this plan.
