A Metal Gear Solid game has been trapped on older hardware for 21 years, but there is newfound hope

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes has been trapped on the Nintendo GameCube since 2004, but with GameCube games added to the Expansion Pack tier of Switch Online for Switch 2 owners, there is some hope that it could one day make a comeback. Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes is a remake of the original Metal Gear Solid game. It essentially remade the Metal Gear Solid experience to be more like Metal Gear Solid 2 while improving the visuals and making the cutscenes more over-the-top and action-packed.

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes earned mostly positive reviews at the time of its release in 2004, though there are some fans that don't like the changes made to the soundtrack and story, particularly how Otacon is presented as more clumsy and silly. Others felt as though Twin Snakes integrating MGS2 mechanics made the game too easy. Regardless, it's a shame that The Twin Snakes remains trapped on the Nintendo GameCube, and while fans shouldn't get their hopes up, there is at least a little more hope now that it could one day be playable on a modern platform.

The Metal Gear Solid games span across decades, though not in chronological order. This should clear the timeline up.

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes was developed by the now-defunct Silicon Knights in collaboration with Konami. The rights to the game are a little messy and unclear, but after GoldenEye 007 made its way to Nintendo Switch Online despite its complicated rights issues, anything is possible. I don't expect to see The Twin Snakes made a part of any upcoming Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection, but I think that there is a non-zero chance the game could one day be featured through the Switch Online + Expansion Pack on the Switch 2. We've already seen other third-party games, like Soulcalibur 2, and while The Twin Snakes is a more complex beast, there's at least a chance now that it could make a comeback.

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes isn't the only MGS game trapped on older hardware. Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops is only on the PSP, while Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots remains trapped on the PS3. Konami hasn't announced any plans to bring those Metal Gear Solid games to modern platforms, but one has to imagine that Master Collection Vol. 2 will feature at least some of them.

Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 still has yet to be fully revealed, but leaks have suggested that it will feature Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (a PSP game that was eventually ported to PS3 and Xbox 360 through the HD Collection), Metal Gear Solid 4, and Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. With The Phantom Pain already playable on modern platforms, it's safe to say many fans would prefer Konami to focus on including one of the MGS games trapped on older hardware, but we'll just have to wait and see what happens.
