Despite having issued an apology, Devolver Digital isn't quick to absolve Randy Pitchford just yet as the publisher continues trolling the Gearbox CEO for his inflammatory $80 Borderlands 4 comment. Set to release on September 12, Borderlands 4 is looking to shake up the series with a new planet named Kairos and a whole set of new playable vault hunters. Despite the controversy, early previews of Borderlands 4 seem to be incredibly positive so far.
Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford found himself in hot water back in May for responding to a fan who was worried about Borderlands 4's potential $80 price tag, saying "If you're a real fan, you'll find a way to make it happen." This flippant response to one of gamers' biggest fears during a time of rising game costs caused an uproar online, one that even prompted prominent indie publisher Devolver Digital to take part in. Devolver jabbed on Twitter, saying gamers will be able to buy four copies of its new sci-fi co-op FPS Mycopunk for the price of an $80 Borderlands 4. Pitchford has since apologized, with Gearbox and 2K subsequently confirming Borderlands 4's $70 price, allowing gamers to breathe a sigh of relief.

Borderlands 4 Can’t Spill the Beans on the Franchise’s Biggest Secret
The Borderlands franchise has no shortage of long-running jokes and secrets, and there's a big one that Borderlands 4 shouldn't shed more light on.
PostsNow, it seems Devolver is using Mycopunk's release day as an opportunity to take yet another shot at Randy Pitchford. In quote-tweeting its original burn from May 20, Devolver reminded gamers they can buy "4.6 copies" of Mycopunk for the price of Borderlands 4 and used the exact same dollar bill with wings emoji to punctuate the tweet. Devolver's new dig at Pitchford even takes into account Borderlands 4's confirmed $70 asking price, and doing the math reveals Mycopunk costs just $15 in comparison.
Devolver Takes Another Shot at Gearbox's Randy Pitchford
All the drama aside, these two games actually share quite a lot of similarities in that they're both first-person sci-fi shooters with cell-shaded art styles. With this in mind, Mycopunk seems to be the perfect indie appetizer for Borderlands fans who are looking forward to the series' fourth installment in just about two months. This may be the reason Devolver chose Mycopunk specifically over any of its other games to do this with. If so, it's a clever marketing tactic, and it'll be interesting to see whether it pays off for Mycopunk on Steam over the coming days and weeks.
CloseBorderlands 4 is coming out on September 12 for Xbox, PlayStation, PC, and Nintendo's new Switch 2. Whether Randy Pitchford's bold confidence in the game pays off is yet to be seen, but early signs are pointing towards a very promising release. In the meantime, Mycopunk is out today on PC. Time will tell whether the co-op FPS receives a console release sometime down the road.
