Hands On With Insomniac’s New Game ’Song of the Deep’

ElectraGames2025-07-035520

Song of the Deep goes out of its way to make you feel small. As 12-year-old Merryn, a young girl searching for her father, you are as a wisp of grass in an ocean of giants, luminescent jellyfish the size of your entire body, and roiling masses of plankton shooting missiles of sharpened sea stuff like torpedoes. You aren't exactly welcome, and the only protection you have is a submarine built by your own two hands.

"Starting out, we had a weird situation: Three different people all pitched submarine games at the same time," Brian Hastings, Chief Creative Officer of Insomniac Games and lead designer on Song of the Deep told me at PAX South today in San Antonio, Texas. "We wanted to explore the depths."
